Maths Success for Students of GCL

Date: 14 Jan 2011

In October 2010, pupils from second, third, fourth and fifth year at Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh took part in the Prism Maths Competition. Prism is a nationwide competition organised by NUI Galway which takes place annually as part of Maths Week celebrations. Both Senior and Junior categories are open to pupils.

Participants had to answer twenty multiple-choice format questions designed to test their mathematical problem solving abilities. Students had to answer the questions without the use of calculators or measuring devices. This year, over 137 schools participated in the Junior level competition. Shane Kelly, a GCL fifth year pupil, came in second place out of more than 2850 students competing. This was a fantastic achievement for Shane, who achieved 10 A’s in his Junior Certificate.  Other Gaelcholáiste students who performed very well in the Prism competition were Cian Murphy and Éamon Ó Briain, who are transition year pupils.

However, it wasn’t just Senior cycle pupils who performed exceptionally well in the competition, pupils in the Junior category scored excellent results also.  Noel Markham came fourth in the country with a score of 15 marks out of 20 (average score nationally was 8 marks). The following pupils featured in the top 100 of the Junior category; Jordan O Connor, Ciaran Sheehan, Ronan McMahon & Niall Healy.

Commenting on the pupils’ success, Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh Principal, Mr. Donncha Ó Treasaigh, said, “I am delighted to learn that pupils from Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh featured so prominently in NUI Galway’s National Maths exam for the third year running”.  He praised the teaching staff in the Maths Department at the College, which is headed up by Ms. Eva Ní Chionnfhalaidh.  He went on to say that, “Priority is given to Maths in the timetable at Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh and pupils and teachers work extremely hard at the subject in the College”.
