LCFE Launches Online Radio Station

LCFE Launches Online Radio Station
Date: 22 May 2012

Friday 18th May marked a significant milestone in Limerick College of Further Education’s history with the launch of a new online radio station at the College. To celebrate the launch, Joe Nash, CEO, Limerick’s Live95FM, presented his hugely popular three-hour Limerick Today programme live from the College’s studios. LCFE’s campus radio is an online station, branded ‘iMix’, which will stream 24 hours a day on the web through its own website www.imixradio.ie and will be available via Apps like TuneIn Radio and SHOUTcast which enable listeners to access over 50,000 radio stations around the globe.

The purpose-built broadcast media suite at the College is the culmination of a significant investment plan last summer by the management team at the College to enhance media facilities at LCFE. The College's existent radio studio facility underwent a major renovation to bring it up to today’s industry standards. The College's new broadcast media suite supports the online station.

‘iMix – LCFE Online Radio’ provides 10 hours of live programming, Monday to Friday, during the academic year. All the station’s news, current affairs and music output is presented by learners on the FETAC Level 6 Advanced Media Production course. The new broadcast media suite consists of two studios: one for programme pre-production & news and the second is an on-air studio utilising the RCS Master Control play-out system. Radio Computing Services, the world’s leading provider of broadcast software to more than 9,000 radio stations and internet stations, supplied the hardware and software that enables LCFE learners to use the latest in radio automation software used by the radio broadcast industry.

Speaking at Friday’s launch, LCFE Director, Pat Maunsell, paid tribute to those involved in planning the new online station: “We are very proud with what we have achieved in the College since we began delivering Further Education programmes here. Our achievements are in no small part due to the hard work and dedication of an excellent staff, both past and present. I’m delighted to finally see this development being formally launched today.”

Limerick College of Further Education (LCFE) had an enrolment of almost 1,200 full-time learners this year and some 2,500 part-time learners. The College is still accepting applications for its new FETAC Level 6 Advanced Media Production/Radio course for the 2012/13 academic year. Check out their website here for more information. LCFE is one of seven centres of education run by City of Limerick VEC.
