LCAES “First Step” Learners go to University of Limerick!

LCAES “First Step” Learners go to University of Limerick!
Date: 16 Jan 2013
This course is one of a range of new ‘First Step’ programmes launched last November 2012 by Minister Joan Burton.  The aim of these courses is to encourage learners to take their first steps back into education.

This course in particular focused on confidence building and included topics like positivity, thinking patterns and assertiveness etc. It also looked at making that move from one to one Basic Skills classes into a group.

The course took place in the University of Limerick Access office in LEDP, Roxboro but the final class was held in a lecture room in the Science & Engineering Department-giving learners a flavour of life at Third Level.  As well as being presented with certificates, the group went on a trip around the Science & Engineering Department’s practical laboratory. The session involved a hands-on lecture from Dr. David Newport of the Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering Department. It concluded with the opportunity to sit in the cockpit of a plane which is being used for research and development purposes.

Progression pathways have been developed for all participants and a new ‘Confidence-building for Learning’ course will commence in mid-January for people who have spelling and reading issues. Please contact Lorraine Markham on 061-445746 for more information.
