LCAES: Limerick VTOS Intercultural Day

LCAES: Limerick VTOS Intercultural Day
Date: 03 Jun 2011

Limerick City Adult Education Service celebrated its own Intercultural Day on Thursday May 19th, as part of Limerick City's Intercultural Week, with a festival of events held at the Adult Education College in Sexton Street. It was a great day, with students and staff working together to make this a unique and truly enjoyable occasion.

A number of different events took place, commencing with an official opening speech by VTOS Co-ordinator Patricia Kennedy.  The special culinary talents of a number of VTOS students from over thirty countries were employed throughout the day including a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony and an assortment of culinary delights from Europe, Africa and Asia.

There were plenty of other events to catch people’s interest: multimedia slide shows, displays from over thirty countries, Irish dancing, a wonderful live music session showcasing the musical talents of the VTOS students including songs and piano from The Democratic Republic of Congo and a recital on the Turkish tambur. There was a special surprise performance by Eoin O’Súilleabháin and Moley from Size2Shoes, which went down a treat.

It was an occasion of great pride as VTOS students showcased their culture to the entire college. Displays were laid out with examples of local food, national costumes, national produce, history, images and magazines. The whole college got the opportunity to have a look at the fantastic displays and talk to the pupils about their home countries.

The LCAES Limerick VTOS Intercultural Day passed off really smoothly thanks to the efficient teamwork of VTOS staff and students who were involved in the organisation of the displays, taking photographs, creating multimedia, providing entertainment as well as preparing and serving the food and refreshments. The event finished perfectly with an international disco by resident Polish DJ Robert.  When it was all over, ESOL Course leader Michelle Benson thanked everyone who had helped to make the day such a tremendous success.  All agreed that the VTOS Intercultural Day provided a platform for integration and we are all looking forward to an even bigger event next year.
