GCL Pupil Visits European Parliment in Strasbourg

Date: 18 Mar 2011

Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh 5th year pupil, Aoife Broderick spent a day in Strasbourg last week as part of her reward for winning the Rotary Youth Leadership Competition. Aoife, the only Limerick representative, was among 24 teenagers from all over Ireland selected to take part in a week-long Leadership Development Programme in Belfast and Dublin.

The week concluded with a visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, where a total of 600 students from all member states got to experience what it’s like to work as an MEP. Aoife was chosen for the programme on the basis of her leadership skills and after completing an interview selection process.

At a ceremony in the European Parliament Office in Dublin before she travelled to Strasbourg, Aoife received a certificate recognising her achievement in getting through to the final stage of the competition. Following her trip to Strasbourg, Aoife said that she thoroughly enjoyed sitting in the European Parliament chamber and debating topical issues with other young people from all over Europe.

The Rotary Youth Leadership Competition is an all-Ireland annual event aimed at helping young people prepare for their future careers. Rotary International is an organisation aimed at advancing global understanding, goodwill and peace through a fellowship of business people united in the ideal of service.

City of Limerick VEC is very proud of Aoife's achievement and is delighted for all those involved at its all-Irish Post-Primary college, Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh.
